Carl was a freshman in the great class of 1968 at SMC and Joyce was a sophomore at Trinity. Joyce knew a lot about SMC since her dad was a fan of SMC basketball and had helped start the Booster Club. Come the 1964 Halloween mixer (for you millennials and Generation Z’s, that is a dance held between an all male college and an all female college, think SMC and Trinity, to allow “mix”ing of the genders!).
And Carl meets Joyce. Dancing to hits from the Beatles, the Supremes, and the Animals fueled a spark of interest, and doing the monkey to “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks helped seal the deal. Joyce didn’t know Carl’s last name, but later remembered that he mentioned living on fourth floor Lyons. A few days later, Carl gets a card addressed to Carl X, Fourth Floor Lyons, Saint Michael’s College. In that card was a handmade card cut from a Halloween napkin showing a cartoon witch going up to the stairs marked fourth floor Lyons. It was signed Joyce. Followed by steady dating, Carl and Joyce were pinned the next year, engaged the following year and married in June of 1968 in the Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel. All those years and every year since, SMC has played a role in our relationship. Two sons have gone to SMC as well. The love we found at SMC is still going strong after all these years.
