My Valentine story began the evening of December 8, 1968. I had the job, on campus through the snack bar (which was on the second floor of Alliot Hall at the time) of servicing all the soda machines on campus. St. Mike’s was all male at that time and I was not anticipating any social interaction (I was grubby!). When I got up to the snack bar to turn in the money and my truck keys, I went to speak with Jeff, who was running the grill and counter that night. He was sitting at one of the tables talking with his girlfriend from Trinity, who had her friend with her, also from Trinity.
The friend’s name was Patricia Foye. In the course of what turned out to be a two-hour conversation, I was blown away by this young woman. That meeting ended up being the last time I saw Patricia until March 10, 1968, when, while I was visiting friends at Trinity, she happened to walk by. I asked my friends if the person who had just passed by was Patricia Foye, they said yes.
I immediately got up and chased her down.
On March 21st, 1968, I proposed. And on March 27, 2017, we will celebrate our 46th anniversary, and now with two married sons and three grandsons.
It’s been great!
