I knew Jordan and I were going to be best friends before I had even met her. She was studying abroad in Grenoble, France during her junior year and had been keeping in touch with a mutual St. Mike’s friend of ours via email – so I got to hear all of the entertaining stories that Jordan was sharing. Our friend had been relaying all of our stateside antics to Jordan as well. We were both constantly being told that “we had to meet each other.”
Fast forward to spring semester, we became fast friends and confidants. I helped her study for Philosophy 101 and she taught me to start writing my papers sooner than the night before they were due. We would sit in a window on the third floor of Cashman Hall, sometimes studying and doing homework, but mostly talking about anything and everything. It was very natural.
We didn’t start dating until the following year, when Jordan was a senior. Our first date actually consisted of us just doing journalism homework all day, and most of my memories from our first year of dating are small, simple moments of walking each other to class or getting dinner in Alliot. That was, and still is, the best part of our relationship – we can be doing the smallest task, but we always find joy in doing it together.
The hardest part of that year was wondering what would happen after graduation. Fortunately, we both got jobs in the Burlington area after college and made the scary transition from college to adulthood together, along with our best feline friend, Petunia. I was also saving up to pop the question, something I knew I wanted to do since our third week of dating. We finally tied the knot last July in Jay, Vermont, on a perfect sunny day surrounded by family and many lifelong friends from St. Mike’s.
