Michael ’75 & Jane (Trinity ’75) Foley

Michael Foley (SMC ’75) and Jane McDowell (Trinity ‘75) met on a cold, blustery Sunday afternoon in late January of 1972 on the hill by the Mary Fletcher unit of the UVM Medical Center on Colchester Avenue. I was with a group of friends from Trinity, and Michael was with some friends from St. Mikes and we were all tobogganing. The two groups started sledding together and then all went for pizza and beer at Big Ben’s across the street from Trinity. Michael and I wound up sitting next to each other at Big Ben’s and started talking. Back at Trinity, I told all of my friends that I thought Michael (or Foles as he was called) was really cute!

The two groups of friends started hanging out together, and Michael and I officially became a couple on St. Patrick’s Day of 1972 – quite appropriate for two Irish individuals! The night started out at “The Mill” and proceeded to a big party at the Sheraton Hotel on Williston Road. Trinity was back in session after our Spring Break, but St. Mike’s was not, so the guys had rented a huge suite at the Sheraton. It was a great night, and the rest is history….

Michael and I remained a couple for the rest of our college days. Our group of about 35 friends became very close and did everything together. We studied hard (well, most of us!) and played hard. Fun times included: parties in Lyons and Founders; Happy Hour every Friday at Hannibuls; nights at The Last Chance; Sunday night dancing at The Red Dog; playing touch football in the snow on the green; night skiing at Bolton Valley; studying in the “spaceship” (Durick Library); sitting and planning our future in Michael’s “El Camino” at Battery Park; parties in the student center; late night runs to Big Burger and Al’s French Fries; and of course P-DAY!

We all graduated in May of 1975, and Michael and I got married three months later in Connecticut in August. All of our friends attended and our bridal party included close friends from both Trinity and Saint Michael’s. Bridesmaids were Maura O’Riordan, Michele Fioretti, Denise Monaldo, Karen Hawley, and Jeannie Mullany. Ushers included Mike Long, Kevin Keane, Don Curley, and Kevin Miler. We have kept in touch with many of our Trinity/St. Mikes friends and no matter how many years or miles that separate us, when we do get together, we fall right back to the great friendship we experienced in college.

Michael and I have had a wonderful marriage filled with love, laughter and friendship. I feel like we grew up together during our years in college, and he remains the love of my life and my best friend. We are the proud parents of three wonderful and accomplished children: Caitlin, Colleen, and Brian. Our daughter Colleen is a 2007 graduate of Saint Michael’s! We are also the proud grandparents of four beautiful grandchildren: Tessa, Luke, Sammy, and Stella and are awaiting the arrival of our fifth grandchild in August. Michael owns his own company in Chester, CT and I have been a special education teacher in Cromwell, CT for many years. Life has been good to us!

We have very fond memories of Saint Michael’s College, Trinity College and the whole Burlington area. It is where our “Love Story” began…..and I still think Michael is cute!
