I was a journalism major at St. Mike’s between 1976-1980. At a classmate’s request, I joined Air Force ROTC and drill team together as a freshman. As a result, I met a student named Matt Hedger ‘78, who was a junior.
Matt attended St. Mike’s on an Air Force scholarship and intended to become a helicopter pilot after graduation. Matt and I were in ROTC, drill team, and wind ensemble. I was a clarinet player and he a trombonist. We became friends, attended the military ball with other dates, and went on wind ensemble and drill team trips together. Matt, who was then in the Air Force, came back in 1980 to attend my graduation ceremony. He had other friends in my graduating class as well.
We went our separate ways, married and divorced other people, and didn’t really keep in touch. Toward the end of 2015, I received a message from Matt on LinkedIn. He asked how I was and suggested we exchange numbers so we could talk. At the time, I was living and teaching in Greensboro, NC and he was working as an instructor pilot at Fort Rucker, Alabama. After talking for a couple months, we decided to meet in person at the halfway point in Atlanta. We had a great time there, continued to talk on the phone daily, and visit each other.
I am now living near Matt in Enterprise, Alabama, and we are in a serious relationship 37 years after my graduation from St. Mike’s!
