I didn’t meet my best friend at St. Mike’s until senior year. I knew who he was—it’s such a small school, pretty much everyone knows everyone. We had played pickup basketball together freshman year, sat opposite each other in a class as sophomores, and even had brief encounters on weeknights out in the 3’s, but we had never had a real conversation. First semester of senior year, it all changed in Will Marquess’s fiction writing class when he paired us together for an exercise.
We bonded over basketball and creative writing, and by the end of class I was pleasantly surprised when he asked for my phone number. He texted me later that afternoon, asking to hangout in Burlington to continue our talk from class. I agreed—I thought he was so cute. We went to the fishing pier hidden by the skate park and talked for hours on a bench in the cold Vermont winter. It was the most perfectly awkward night I had ever had, and it became the start of our story. It would take the rest of senior year for my best friend to ask me out, but by the time graduation rolled around my best friend had become my boyfriend, and now we both live in Boston just a couple miles away from each other as he pursues a Master’s in Education at Boston University and I navigate the 9 to 5 working world as a Junior Copywriter. And all this time later, Logan is still my best friend. He even let me drag him on his first plane ride recently as we explored the beautiful country of Iceland together!
