I began working towards a degree at St. Mike’s in 1986. Four years later I achieved that goal. But that was not the greatest thing that happened to me in those four years. In the spring of my sophomore year I met a freshman named Debbie. She was the friend of a friend of a friend. Debbie immediately reached into my heart and soul and I could not stop spewing to her all my deepest thoughts, wants, needs, and aspirations. As a quiet man, this was unlike me. To my joy she held all the same right down to the number of children we wanted to raise and where we wanted to raise them. She even laughed at my bad jokes. This was the first time we met and we went off talking for hours and hours and hours. As our relationship progressed, I knew rather quickly this was not a marriage of convenience. I knew she was a gift from God, my soulmate. I wanted to marry her but I didn’t want to distract her from her goal of earning a degree from St. Mike’s. But in the spring of ’91 I asked her father for permission and he happily granted it. On the day of her last final exam, I drove back up to Winooski and surprised her on her way back to her townhouse in the 200’s. I got down on one knee in the parking lot in front of Founder’s Hall and she said YES! Twenty seven years later, we have three amazing children and we continue to fall deeper in love with each passing day.
